EXplainable AI (XAI) has become a critical research domain since AI systems have progressed to being deployed in essential sectors such as health, finance, and criminal justice. These systems have been making decisions that would largely affect the lives of human beings; thus, it’s necessary to understand why their output will end at such results. In this sense, interpretability and trust in those decisions form the basis of their broad acceptance and successful integration. Transparency, accountability, and, finally, trust have made the development of tools and techniques likely to make these AI systems’ decisions interpretable become the most important.

The intrinsic complexity—the so-called “black boxes”—given by AI models makes research in the field of XAI difficult. These black-box models make predictions and classifications without explaining how these decisions are made and why. This opacity sometimes leaves users, and even stakeholders, rather uncertain, leaving a void, especially in high-stakes applications where the consequences of AI decisions are huge. The challenge is making these AI models more interpretable without losing their predictive power. The impetus for creating interpretable AI models is to build trust with stakeholders about the decisions made by AI entities resulting from understandable and justifiable reasoning.

However, present methods widely used for explaining AI decisions include but are not limited to, LIME (Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations) and SHAP (SHapley Additive explanations). These are preferred methods because they offer a way to explain the decisions of any AI model without the model’s inner workings having to be understood. However, these methods primarily aim for the important features but need a clear capability to differentiate between what a feature can potentially influence and what it contributes to a measure of interest. This difference may be crucial because making the explanation more precise and actionable is essential.

To address these shortcomings, a group of researchers from Umeå University and Aalto University proposed the py-ciu package, a Python implementation of the concepts underlying the Contextual Importance and Utility method. The CIU method was designed to yield model-agnostic explanations and disentangle feature importance from contextual utility to understand AI decisions better. The py-ciu package follows a similar idea and can thus create a tool for explaining tabular data like LIME and the SHAP package do, but with the added creativity of dealing with the separation between feature importance and utility.

The package py-ciu computes two important measures: Contextual Importance (CI) and Contextual Utility (CU). CI indicates to what extent a feature could alter the output generated by a model, measuring, in other words, how much variation in the value of the feature could change the decision. Under the line, CU measures how much input space value for a feature contributes to the actual value of that feature in the output. This dual approach makes the py-ciu package show more nuance and accuracy in the explanation than the traditional approaches, especially when the influence and usefulness of features are at variance. The tool, for example, can describe high-potential impact features that do not contribute much to the current decision, an insight one might miss with other methods.

In practice, the Py-ciu package has several advantages over other XAI tools. From the front, it introduces the concept of Potential Influence plots, overcoming the limitation of null explanations often appearing throughout methods, especially LIME and SHAP. These plots provide, at a glance, an understanding of the potential improvement in changing the value of a feature and changes in a feature’s value that run the risk of worsening a particular outcome. That information rounds out how individual features influence AI decisions. For instance, the case study based on the Titanic dataset has shown that a passenger’s age and the number of siblings had an important effect on the predicted survival rate, clearly pointed to by CI and CU values. In their turn, the researchers assigned quantitative values to it, e.g., a given passenger with a survival probability of 61%, which in turn enables the tool to produce precisely informative explanations.

The py-ciu package is a big step ahead in XAI, and more specifically, in giving in-detail, context-aware explanations that boost transparency and trust in AI systems. The software tool fills in an important gap by overcoming the limitations of current approaches, opening up new possibilities for researchers and practitioners to better understand and communicate decisions made by AI models. For example, studies by the research teams of Umeå University and Aalto University are efforts on this frontier line for the development of better interpretability of AI in order to withstand serious use in critical applications.

To conclude,  The py-ciu package integrates deeply into the arsenal of tools for XAI. The obtained transparent and easy-to-interpret information on AI decisions stimulated the riveting future studies on the buildup of AI machine accountability and translucence. The advanced position of this package testifies to the need for further progress in XAI, as the demand for reliable AI is increasing daily and in different areas.
