"Folks, I'm gonna go ahead and say it: Cancel culture has gone too far."
This is the joke Stephen Colbert started his Monday night monologue off with, just a few days after the news broke that The Late Show is being cancelled by CBS — shortly after Colbert called out the network's parent company, Paramount, for what he described as "a big fat bribe" paid to President Donald Trump.
Despite the grim news, Colbert kept his usual light tone, joking about the timing of CBS' decision to pull the plug before responding directly to Trump gloating over the cancellation on Truth Social and saying that Colbert's "talent was even less than his ratings."
"How dare you, sir? Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism?" Colbert says in the clip above, before turning to stare into a side camera. "Go **** yourself."
