India’s ‘Largest’ Aluminum Solar Module Frame Factory In Gujarat

Gujarat-based H&H Aluminium has established what it terms as the largest solar frame manufacturing plant in India, which can support an annual solar module production capacity of 6 GW. 

The current production capacity of the facility in Rajkot, Gujarat, is 24,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA), according to a company statement released on the occasion of the factory’s inauguration recently.  

Its frames are made from high-grade aluminum alloy, of 6063-T5 or equivalent, and enhanced with UV-stabilized coating. The company claims that its lightweight frames weigh approximately 1.5 to 3.0 kg per frame, meet ISO 9001 and IEC standards for solar components, and are fully recyclable.

Built with an investment of around INR 1.5 billion ($17.5 million), the 28,000 sq. m. facility started trial production in June 2025. Commercial operations are targeted to begin within the next month.  

At full capacity, it said, the factory will be able to support sales of INR 7.0 billion to INR 7.5 billion ($82 million to $88 million). 

H&H Aluminium uses Chinese equipment for the Rajkot factory that includes aluminum extrusion presses and anodizing lines, since these are not manufactured in India. However, the company Director said, “Our initial target is to meet the quality provided by China. Pricing and quality were the two major reasons why indigenous production of aluminium frames for solar modules did not pick up in India. The quality (of domestic production) is not at par with that of China.”

According to the company, India currently imports up to 95% of aluminum solar panel frames owing to the lack of domestic manufacturing of these components. The government is supporting the industry with its 5-year anti-dumping duty on anodized aluminum frames imported from China, imposed in September 2024. The duties range from $403/MT to $577/MT.  

However, there is a growing tribe of local aluminum solar frame manufacturers. Solar module manufacturer Alpex Solar plans to establish a factory to support its in-house requirements. Split junction box supplier GenX PV India also revealed plans for an 18,000 MT annual production factory in Raipur. In December 2024, Insolation Green Energy said it will set up a 24,000 MT aluminum frame project (see Insolation Green Energy Announces 7 GW Solar Cell & Module Production Plans).   

India’s efforts to boost the domestic solar module production capacity are mainly thanks to policy measures such as the Approved List of Models and Manufactures (ALMM) List-I. From June 1, 2026, it will also bring in an ALMM List-II for solar cells. It has also proposed establishing a separate ALMM for the distributed renewable energy (DRE) segment (see India Proposes Separate ALMM List For Distributed Renewable Energy).
