Nigeria-based engineering and manufacturing company Tranos has started construction on an 800 MW solar panel manufacturing factory in the country.  

The company plans to initially start with a single manufacturing line with 400 MW of annual production capacity. It expects this capacity to come online within 15 months to 18 months. The entire planned 800 MW capacity in Ogun State is targeted to be commissioned by 2027.

Tranos says the factory will create 160 jobs, a number which will be expanded to around 400 within 2 years. 

“Our groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter for Nigerian manufacturing and Africa’s industrial future,” stated the company. 

Tranos’ announcement follows various solar PV manufacturing initiatives recently announced in the country. In May 2025, Hunan Red Sun and IRS Group announced plans for a 600 MW solar module manufacturing plant, following Oando Clean Energy’s 1.2 GW module assembly project with a recycling plant, as revealed in March this year (see Hunan Red Sun To Build 600 MW Solar Factory In Nigeria). 

Nigeria recently proposed a ban on imported solar panels with a view to boosting local manufacturing capabilities in solar PV manufacturing. However, the proposal has reportedly been put on hold, as the market lacks sufficient capacity of its own to meet the growing demand for solar in the country.
