As Europe accelerates its renewable energy (RE) transition, demand for high-capacity inverter solutions, both megawatt-scale (MW) centralized inverters and utility-scale string inverters, is rising sharply. Driven by the growth of large-scale solar parks and evolving grid support regulations, project developers are increasingly seeking scalable, high-efficiency inverter technologies that can optimize energy yields and ensure grid compliance.
Ingeteam, a Spain-based provider of PV inverters and energy storage solutions, which also has a presence in the hydro and wind sectors, has developed MW-scale central and utility-scale string inverters. Leveraging the international platform of Intersolar Europe 2025, the company’s booth showcased its latest centralized MW-scale and modular virtual power station, along with other products. During a short interview, Adolfo Guerrero Garcia, Sales Application Engineering Manager Solar PV & BESS at Ingeteam, highlighted the company’s INGECON SUN 3Power U C Series central inverter to the TaiyangNews team.
Company Background
According to Garcia, Ingeteam, primarily focused on power electronics equipment and control mechanisms, has up to 34 GW of global installed PV equipment capacity and 10 GWh of BESS applications. In addition to its headquarters and a factory in Spain, it has manufacturing capability in the USA and Brazil. The Spain factory has a production capacity of between 8 GW and 9 GW per year, stated Garcia.
Liquid-Cooled MW Scale Central Inverter
Featuring a physical model of the company’s latest INGECON SUN 3Power U C Series central inverter at the booth, Garcia shared a brief overview of the product, typically designed for the USA market. This compact 1,500 V DC system voltage-rated liquid-cooled INGECON SUN 5380TL U series inverter, featuring 1 MPPT channel with a voltage range of between 992 V and 1,300 V, can integrate up to 32 PV strings. Engineered for up to 130% DC/AC oversized installations, this system can deliver a maximum 5,378 kVA 3-phase (690 V phase-voltage and 60 Hz system frequency) output power.
This compact system, featuring an IP65 / NEMA 4 compartment, houses power and control electronics, DC fuses, busbars, and power phases. However, these high-powered IGBTs, the power phases, and also the IP65 / NEMA 4 compartment, are cooled by their Liquid Cooling System (LCS). The LCS uses a biodegradable glycol water mixture as coolant.
Alongside maintaining the operating temperature, this model has multiple safety features on both in DC and AC sides. Addressing the potential risk of high surge voltage stemming from lightning on the DC side, it is equipped with a Type II surge protection device (SPD). Ensuring the safety of the DC input side during on-load switch break of up to 5,625 A DC, it has a motorized DC load break disconnect switch. Moreover, the system includes additional safety features such as insulation failure monitoring and anti-islanding protection, which enable safe system startup in the morning and ensure operator safety on the AC side during shutdown, respectively. However, the AC side safety features are integrated Type II SPD, motorized air-circuit breaker (ACB) at the output, and short-circuit or overload protection.
