SMA Solar, a familiar name in the PV inverter segment, showcased its broad product portfolio at Intersolar Europe 2025, targeting Europe’s residential, commercial & industrial (C&I), and large-scale utility solar markets. During a brief visit to the company’s booth, Bart Van Remortel, Solution Manager for Energy Management at SMA Solar, gave an overview of the company’s several new offerings for the TaiyangNews team. He highlighted the upgraded Sunny Home Manager 2.0, an intelligent home energy management system (EMS).
Product Description
The Sunny Home Manager 2.0 is a smart EMS designed specifically for homeowners. It automatically monitors and controls energy flows within the home, enabling efficient use of self-generated solar power and reducing electricity costs without compromising consumer comfort.
The system intelligently manages household appliances, such as washing machines and dishwashers, as well as battery storage systems, heat pumps, and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. According to Remortel, the decade-old product has evolved from simply optimizing solar self-consumption based on forecasts to supporting cost-effective usage in line with new dynamic electricity tariffs, fully aligned with the latest European grid regulations.
Latest Features
Remortel specifically referenced Germany’s new Paragraph 15R legislation, which empowers network operators to limit household energy consumption during peak grid loads. To comply with this regulation, consumers are required to reduce the power usage of certain high-demand devices, such as heat pumps, EV chargers, and battery systems, to help maintain grid stability. In response, the upgraded Sunny Home Manager 2.0 receives a signal from the storage system to initiate load curtailment, and then automatically distributes the available power across all compatible brands.
In terms of price optimization under dynamic electricity tariffs, the upgraded model offers substantial benefits, noted Remortel. Homeowners equipped with storage systems or EV chargers can schedule energy consumption more effectively. In response, the upgraded Sunny Home Manager 2.0 receives a signal from the storage system indicating the need to curtail appliance loads, then automatically distributes the available power across all compatible brands.
Integration of dynamic tariffs with connected devices can be implemented via 2 primary routes. Through a recent partnership with LichtBlick, an integrated electricity utility, SMA now offers a comprehensive solution that incorporates dynamic tariffs, including taxes. Using this simplified approach, the Sunny Home Manager 2.0 EMS system imports dynamic tariffs with subsequent load optimization in the background.
For consumers seeking alternatives to LichtBlick, SMA Solar’s upcoming EPEX SPOT integration could enable daily imports of dynamic tariffs, followed by system optimization. To resolve discrepancies between EPEX SPOT tariffs and the day-ahead tariffs from utility providers, this solution can be configured to match the actual rates offered by the energy supplier, Remortel explained. Unlike LichtBlick’s model, EPEX SPOT allows consumers to choose among multiple utility providers for dynamic tariff integration. This feature is expected to launch next year, according to Remortel.
