You ask a chatbot a question — and it loops or misunderstands.
You get recommendations — but they’re generic, irrelevant, or clearly rule-based.
You try to delegate — but the product throws the task back at you with more friction than it removes.

The result? A user experience that feels more performative than intelligent.
Like AI is just there for the press release — not for the person using it.

I’ve been building AI-native products in the real world, from zero to production.

And here’s what I’ve learned:
“AI” won’t feel intelligent until we stop thinking in features — and start designing for reasoning.

Let’s unpack why this happens — and how we can fix it.

The UX Problem Beneath the “AI” Hype

The issue isn’t the model. It’s the system.

When most teams say they’re “AI-powered,” what they mean is:

It’s like giving a toddler access to Google and calling it a personal assistant.

But real users don’t care about embeddings or inference — they care about outcomes:

If the answer is no, they won’t say your model is undertrained.
They’ll just say: This app is dumb.

What’s Really Going On: LLMs vs Chatbots vs Vector Databases

To fix this, let’s demystify the core tools most AI products are built on:

The Real Gap Is UX — and Here’s Where Designers Come In

1. Context Is the New UX Baseline

Most AI apps today act like you’re a stranger every time you show up.

Designers need to build context-aware scaffolding:
