There’s a dirty secret in AI products right now: Almost every app claims to be “AI-powered” but…
Most of them still feel dumb.
You ask a chatbot a question — and it loops or misunderstands.
You get recommendations — but they’re generic, irrelevant, or clearly rule-based.
You try to delegate — but the product throws the task back at you with more friction than it removes.
The result? A user experience that feels more performative than intelligent.
Like AI is just there for the press release — not for the person using it.
I’ve been building AI-native products in the real world, from zero to production.
And here’s what I’ve learned:
“AI” won’t feel intelligent until we stop thinking in features — and start designing for reasoning.
Let’s unpack why this happens — and how we can fix it.
The UX Problem Beneath the “AI” Hype
The issue isn’t the model. It’s the system.
When most teams say they’re “AI-powered,” what they mean is:
- A chat interface bolted onA GPT prompt wrapper with no memory or contextSome basic retrieval from a vector DB — but no orchestration or reasoning
It’s like giving a toddler access to Google and calling it a personal assistant.
But real users don’t care about embeddings or inference — they care about outcomes:
- “Did this app understand me?”“Did it reduce my decision fatigue?”“Did it anticipate what I needed next?”
If the answer is no, they won’t say your model is undertrained.
They’ll just say: This app is dumb.

What’s Really Going On: LLMs vs Chatbots vs Vector Databases
To fix this, let’s demystify the core tools most AI products are built on:
🧠 LLMs (Large Language Models)
They’re great at:
- Natural language generationPattern recognition from massive corporaGeneral-purpose knowledge answers
But they struggle with:
- Personal contextTask orchestrationLong-term memoryActionability
💬 Chatbots
They’re often just front-ends. Most fail because:
- They’re stateless (no memory of your past queries)They’re too open-ended (users don’t know what to ask)They aren’t grounded in real system actions
📚 Vector Databases
Useful for:
- Semantic searchRetrieving context-relevant data from unstructured sourcesPowering RAG (retrieval-augmented generation)
But by themselves, they don’t create intelligence. They create recall — which needs orchestration to become useful.
Think of it like this:
LLM = language brain
Vector DB = memory
Chat interface = mouth
You = the system designer.
And if you don’t connect them meaningfully? Your user talks to a head with no spine.
The Real Gap Is UX — and Here’s Where Designers Come In
So how do we fix it?
We stop designing “features.”
And start designing interactions that make intelligence feel alive.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
1. Context Is the New UX Baseline
Most AI apps today act like you’re a stranger every time you show up.
Designers need to build context-aware scaffolding:
- What did the user do last time?What are their preferences?What are they trying to do, not just say?
Don’t ask users to re-explain. Design for memory.
2. AI Products Should Anticipate, Not Just React
You know what doesn’t feel intelligent?
Typing “reschedule my flight” and getting a response like “Sure! What would you like to do?”
Design for intelligent defaults:
- “Looks like your flight overlaps with a meeting — should I push it to 6pm and rebook the hotel?”“You’ve been browsing Bali. Want me to plan a week with yoga stays under $200/night?”
3. Prompting Isn’t UX. Guidance Is.
A blank chatbot window is cognitive overload.
Design affordances like:
- Smart suggestionsPreset actions (“Summarize this thread,” “Plan this trip,” “Refine this idea”)Contextual nudges (“Ask about this document,” “Need help rewriting this?”)
AI UX should reduce thinking, not increase it.
4. Design for Failure Gracefully (Because It Will Happen)
Your AI won’t always get it right.
But you can make failure feel human:
- “Sorry, I misunderstood that. Want to rephrase or try this instead?”“That input’s a bit vague. Can I ask a quick follow-up?”
Failing intelligently builds trust.
5. Connect UX to Reasoning, Not Just Output
This is the hard part — and the differentiator.
Behind every UI choice, ask:
“What is the system reasoning with right now?”
If it’s just reacting to surface inputs, you’ll always be behind.
But if it’s combining user goals + system state + semantic memory + real constraints?
Now you’re building something that thinks.
The Takeaway: AI Isn’t a Layer. It’s a Lens.
If you want your product to feel truly intelligent, stop designing “with AI.”
Start designing for intelligence.
That means:
- Mapping how decisions are madeStructuring context like a designer structures flowsBuilding scaffolds that make your system feel less like a tool — and more like a teammate
Because the future of UX isn’t chat.
It’s systems that understand you.
