Coal India Limited (CIL) is seeking prospective renewable energy buyers for the offtake of power from its 4.5 GW portfolio on a long-term basis at a fixed tariff. This capacity comprises 2.5 GW to 3.0 GW of solar and 1.5 GW to 2.0 GW of wind energy.
It will be supplied to the nearest interconnection point of the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) network.
CIL, the world’s largest producer of coal, plans to develop 4.5 GW capacity in a phased manner, ensuring the development of these projects on suitable land it will identify. The company will also be responsible for securing grid connectivity and issuing an EPC contract.
The renewable energy project will be able to supply at the delivery point a minimum of 11,500 million units (MU) annually. The proportion of total energy supplied from the solar project is not less than 60%.
The supply of renewable energy will begin in 24 months from the date of signing of the long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), whose duration will be 25 years, according to the expression of interest (EOI) documents.
Selected offtakers will be responsible for sourcing the entire power from the project on a take-or-pay basis. Tariff will be fixed in either INR or USD terms. They will also be required to secure all necessary approvals and permits for the supply of power from the delivery point to its facilities.
CIL launched the tender on May 19, 2025, specifying the last date for EOI submissions as June 9, 2025. Tender details are available on CIL’s e-procurement website with tender ID 2025_CILHQ_335736_1.
This call follows the CIL signing one of the world’s largest renewable energy contracts to supply 4.5 GW of solar and wind energy to AM Green Ammonia from its projects in Gujarat and Rajasthan (see Coal India To Supply 4.5 GW Renewable Energy For Green Ammonia).
