英语里有些表达，一听就觉得有画面感，能把意思传到心坎里。最近读外刊时看到两个很好用的表达，和大家分享：

《巴伦周刊》关于美国和各国贸易谈判的报道：
Stocks fall a second day. Patience wears thin on trade talks.
股市连续第二天下跌，市场对贸易谈判的耐心日渐消磨。
wear thin 的意思是：逐渐消磨殆尽、快要耗尽、越来越少（如耐心、信任、借口等）。
wear：原义是“磨损、耗损”，可及物（wear clothes）也可不及物（My shoes are wearing out）。
thin：在这里不是“瘦”的意思，而是“稀薄、减少”的状态。
Wear thin是一个极具画面感的表达，我们可以将将“耐心”或“信任”等抽象概念想象成一层纸，经过摩擦后变得越来越“薄”——这就是wear thin。
本文中，Patience wears thin也可以说：run out of patience, lose patience, grow tired of, grow weary of，不过wear thin更具形象性，就像把一张纸慢慢磨薄、磨破。
它的常见搭配有：
Patience wears thin（耐心快被磨光）
Excuses are wearing thin（借口越来越站不住脚）
Jokes are wearing thin（笑话不再好笑）
Trust is wearing thin（信任逐渐减少）
看个例句：
After months of AI-generated spam flooding social platforms, users’ tolerance is wearing thin.在人工智能生成垃圾内容横行社交平台几个月后，用户的容忍度正在接近极限。
这个短语可以用在社会议题中，描述民众对对政策、物价、冲突失去耐心；也可以用在媒体语境中，表达社会情绪的变化；在雅思/考研等英语作文中，也可以用它来描述情绪的递进转折（first..., but as time passed, patience wore thin），例如，在“远程办公”话题中，我们可以这样描述公众对远程办公态度的变化：
First, the company offered remote work options to its employees, but as time passed, patience wore thin as employees struggled with isolation and reduced productivity.起初，公司为员工提供了远程办公的选择，但随着时间的推移，员工们因孤立和生产力下降而逐渐失去耐心。

Global shipping is grinding to a standstill. It’s a matter of time until Americans feel it.
全球航运几近停滞，美国民众感受到影响只是时间问题。
grind指“磨碎”，也可表示缓慢沉重地移动（grind forward），standstill表示“静止状态、停滞”，尤用于交通、经济、谈判等场景。
grind to a standstill表示“缓慢地彻底停滞”，这是一个极具画面感的表达，比单纯的“stop”更有层次和冲击力。
《新概念英语第三册》第39课《Nothing to worry about》 中就有类似的用法：
Bruce charged at it, but in the middle, the car came to a grinding halt.
布鲁斯猛冲了过去，但在中间，车嘎然停住。
grind to a standstill/halt = come to a standstill/halt，只不过这里把grinding用作形容词，表示一种刺耳的声音。
这个短语可以用在交通场景中，例如：
After a minor accident on the highway, traffic quickly ground to a standstill during rush hour.在高峰时段，高速公路上因一起轻微事故，交通很快陷入瘫痪。
也可以用来表示系统或网站瘫痪：
The company’s website ground to a standstill after a sudden surge in traffic during the online sale.公司网站在网上促销期间因流量激增而陷入瘫痪。
可以表示流程或进度陷入停滞：
When the project manager suddenly resigned, the whole team’s progress ground to a standstill.项目经理突然辞职后，整个团队的进度陷入停滞。
还可以用于描述情绪：
Her motivation ground to a standstill after repeated failures in job interviews.多次求职失败后，她的动力彻底停滞了。
