875 MW online in Qatar: QatarEnergy, the state-owned petroleum company of Qatar, has commissioned 875 MW of new solar PV capacity, connecting it to the national grid. It expands the state’s total solar energy production to 1.675 GW. This capacity comprises the 458 MW Ras Laffan and the 417 MW Mesaieed solar PV plants that, along with the Al-Kharsaah project, will contribute toward supplying about 15% of the total peak electricity demand. JA Solar has supplied its DeepBlue 3.0 solar modules for the 875 MW capacity, while TrinaTracker delivered its solar trackers. The contribution from solar power plants will further increase to 30% when the 2 GW Dukhan Solar Power Plant is commissioned by 2029 (see QatarEnergy Announces 2 GW New Solar Power Mega Project In Qatar).
Renewable energy deals for the Chinese in Azerbaijan: The Azerbaijan Ministry of Energy recently entered into contracts for close to 2.4 GW of new renewable energy and battery storage projects. The 6 documents include cooperation for the construction of 260 MW solar power plants, a 100 MW floating PV project, a 30 MW battery energy storage system (BESS), the development of a 2 GW offshore wind energy project, and another 2 GW wind project, among others. These projects comprise Universal Solar Azerbaijan LLC’s 100 MW Gobustan Solar Power Plant, which is to be commissioned in 2026. SOCAR Green and China Datang Overseas Investment will explore the 100 MW floating solar plant with a 30 MW BESS project on Lake Boyukshor, for which a feasibility study will be conducted. SOCAR Green and PowerChina Resources Limited will also evaluate the implementation of a 160 MW solar power plant that can be integrated with a storage facility in the future.
75 MW solar projects in Egypt: The Arab Consulting Office has facilitated a strategic agreement between China’s Sungrow and Tongwei Solar with Egypt’s IRSC for Renewable Energy Solutions. The collaboration targets the development of 75 MW of solar PV projects across multiple sites in Egypt. While Tongwei will supply its high-efficiency PV modules, Sungrow will deliver advanced inverter and storage technologies for this capacity. According to the partners, this capacity will contribute to the country’s national decarbonization goals.
LONGi’s Algeria interest: Leading Chinese solar PV manufacturer LONGi has expressed interest in exploring solar PV manufacturing in Algeria. The company’s Regional President for the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia, James Jin, led a delegation to meet Algeria’s Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, to discuss the prospects. “This will contribute to enhancing local content in the field of renewable energy and support Algeria's aspirations to become an industrial and export platform,” stated the ministry without sharing other details.
6.3 MW solar plant in Comoros: A 6.3 MW solar power plant in Africa’s Comoros has been commissioned to meet the country’s growing energy demand. The project is backed by an AED 25.7 million ($7 million) financing from Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). It will deliver clean, reliable energy for the capital city of Moroni and nearby regions, thus bringing down its reliance on fossil fuels.
