Palo Alto’s chili cook-off at Mitchell Park is one of many events happening today to celebrate the Independence of the United States.
The cookout is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today (July 4), with food trucks, live music and games for kids. Groups of Palo Alto residents are cooking up chili for people to sample. The city will present awards for best overall chili, best spirit and best-decorated booth. Attendees will vote on a “people’s choice award” with a $750 cash prize.
Mountain View will have fireworks at Shoreline Amphitheater, with music by the San Francisco Symphony starting at 7 p.m. Tickets to the show start at $35. Mountain View residents can get tickets for $15. People can also rent a kayak or pedal boat and watch the fireworks from Shoreline Lake. Boat rentals start at $120 and come with a barbecue dinner.
Redwood City firefighters will host pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. today (July 4) at their station at 755 Marshall Street. Starting at 10 a.m., the city will have a parade and chalk festival in down town, with all kinds of food and crafts for sale. Kids can watch a magician, a clown or get their face painted until 5 p.m. The celebration will end with fireworks over the Redwood City Port starting around 9:30 p.m.
Woodside will have a day of rodeo activities at the Mounted Patrol San Mateo County arena at 521 Kings Mountain Road. The grand entry will happen at 12:30 p.m. today, followed by three hours of competition. Besides the roping, barrel racing and other rodeo activities, kids can take pony rides, enjoy a petting zoo and see a mechanical bull. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for children. Kids under 5 can go for free.
Menlo Park is opening Burgess Pool and Belle Haven Pool for $4 a person today until they reach capacity. A parade will start at Burgess Park at 11 a.m., followed by carnival games and music until 2 p.m.
Los Altos Hills will have a parade starting at 10 a.m. starting at the town hall, going down Fremont Road and ending at Gardner Bullis School, where drinks and watermelon will be served. The Los Altos Hills Horseman’s Association will have six to eight horses in the back of the parade.
Foster City will have an all-day event today (July 4) at Leo Ryan Park, starting with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Foster City Rotary Club at 9 a.m. The park will have food trucks, live music, a dog parade and family games. A fireworks show over the lagoon starts around 9:30 p.m.
Half Moon Bay will have a pancake breakfast in downtown from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. followed by a parade and block party on Main Street. Kids can do axe throwing, bounce houses, face painting and henna tattoos. Vendors will sell Portuguese beef sandwiches, root beer floats, beer and wine.
Great America in Santa Clara will have fireworks starting at 9:40 tonight.
Sunnyvale will host a drone light show instead of fireworks. Synchronized drones will light up the sky set to music. See the drone show at Baylands Park at 999 E. Caribbean Drive. Free parking opens at 6:30 p.m., a DJ will begin performing at 7 and the drones will go on at 9:15 p.m.
