Nordic-focused solar developer and independent power producer (IPP) Alight has announced signing what it terms the largest solar power purchase agreement (PPA) in Finland to date.
It has secured the PPA with Autoliv, the world’s ‘largest’ automotive safety supplier that will contract a majority of the clean solar energy produced from Alight’s 100 MW solar park in Finland’s Eurajoki.
Alight will finance, construct, own and operate the solar facility, which will contribute to the company’s overarching target of at least 5 GW of installed capacity in its portfolio by 2030.
For Autoliv, this project is aligned with the group’s target to achieve carbon neutrality in its operations by 2030. It will also provide it with long-term electricity supply at a stable, low price. Power generated by the solar plant will be fed into the Finnish grid.
“Solar power has a great potential to transform the Finnish energy landscape by complimenting its wind production, and we’re proud that together with Autoliv, we are announcing the largest solar PPA in Finland,” said Alight CEO Warren Campbell.
The 100 MW project is projected to generate 100 GWh annually when it comes online in 2026. Alight recently raised €46 million in senior debt from SEB and ABN AMRO for the project, whose construction is scheduled to begin this spring.
Alight said it will be among the country’s largest solar parks on completion. Bigger solar plants are already being announced in the country, such as the 129 MW Taaleri Energia project (see Europe Solar PV News Snippets: Eltel To Build Finland’s 2nd Largest Solar Plant & More).
OX2 is working on some of the largest solar power projects in Finland including 475 MW Huittinen facility in the Satakunta region, and the 500 MW Aurinkonevat solar plant in South Ostrobothnia, both currently under development.
Finland targets to achieve a 62% share of renewables by 2030 in gross final consumption per sector. In the electricity sector, the renewables target is 53% targeted to increase from 47.9% in 2022. The focus segments among renewables in the country are on wind energy and biomass, according to the IEA Bioenergy’s country report.
As per the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Finland’s total installed solar PV capacity at the end of 2024 was 1.203 GW, representing an annual increase of 217 MW last year.
