Step 1: Create an Account

I started by going to fillout.com and selecting “Get Started.” By signing up, you'll automatically be placed on the free plan to try Fillout before committing to a paid plan!

Step 2: Explore Templates

After creating an account, Fillout asked me how I wanted to get started:

There was also the option to connect my Google Calendar to book meetings with a scheduling form, choose a payment type to collect payments in a form with Stripe, upload a PDF to turn it into an interactive form or choose a workflow.

I selected “Template” to explore Fillout's pre-built designs. Rather than starting from scratch, the ready-made templates save lots of time and provide a solid foundation for customization.

Step 3: Select a Template

Next, I had to pick a template. There were dozens to choose from across a variety of industries.

After selecting my template, Fillout gave me a little preview of my form to see what it included. I hit “Use this template.”

Step 4: Name Your Form

The first thing I did within the editor was name my form. I did this by hitting the empty field on the top left.

Naming your form is more important than you might think. If you give your forms generic names like “Customer Survey,” you'll struggle to find the specific one you need.

Be specific with your form names. Something like “2025 Spring Product Feedback Survey” tells you exactly what it is at a glance.

Step 5: Edit Your Form

The first slide of the form was easy to edit. The left panel displayed my “Settings,” where I could edit the button text and change the image and layout.

At the bottom, I could click through the different pages or add more by hitting “Add page.” I went to the next page.

Fillout uses a drag-and-drop interface that makes adding and arranging fields easy. This time on the left sidebar, there were different question types I could add. This included everything from simple text fields to multiple-choice, file uploads, and even payment collection. All I had to do was click and drag the element onto my form!

Hovering over the elements on my page, I could click and drag them in whatever order I wanted.

Step 6: Set Up Conditional Logic

One of my favorite things about Fillout is the conditional logic. Fillout forms aren’t just static. They actually respond to what people enter!

With conditional logic, you can show or hide questions based on answers, add calculations, and even combine multiple forms.

Initially, I felt a bit lost when trying to create a conditional logic flow. The trick I discovered was to first create all your questions, then go back and add the logic.

Click on any question, select the “Logic” tab, and you can set conditions like “If answer is X, show question Y.” Conditional logic has saved me from creating overly long forms that ask irrelevant questions.

Step 7: Customize the Look & Feel

Customizing the look and feel of your form is another area where Fillout shines. Just select “Theme” on the top left of your form.

After selecting “Theme,” you can change your form's colors, add your logo, and even access the “Advanced Designer” where you can add custom CSS. Don't go too crazy with the colors though!

Step 8: Preview & Publish

After you've built your form, hit the “Preview” button on the top right to see exactly how it looks and functions before sharing it. This lets you test the flow, catch any issues, and make adjustments.

Once you're happy with everything, hit “Publish” on the top right.

Step 9: Share a Link or Embed the Form

Go to the “Share” tab on the top navigation bar. Fillout will generate a unique URL for your form that you can share with respondents.

The “Results” tab is where all your collected data will live. Fillout organizes responses in a clean table format that you can sort and filter. You can also export the data to CSV or Excel for a more complex analysis.
