Boson Quantum's self-developed photonic quantum computing chip
AsianFin – Beijing Boson Quantum Technology, a leading company in the photonic quantum computing industry chain, announced the completion of its A+ round of financing on Wednesday.
The funding round was led by Beijing High-Precision and Cutting-edge Industry Development Investment Fund, managed by Beijing Industrial Investment, a Beijing government-backed private equity fund.
The company said that the funds from this round will be primarily used in three key areas: continuing the development of coherent photonic quantum computers and ramping up small-scale production; building a "Quantum Computing+" ecosystem and expanding practical applications in various industries; and further investment in research and development of general-purpose photonic quantum computing technologies.
Founded in 2020, Boson Quantum focuses on the development of scalable, programmable photonic quantum computing platforms and the practical application of quantum computing.
The company is dedicated to the industrialization and commercialization of quantum computing, with a specific focus on photonic quantum computing. It has already advanced from the exploratory phase of "Quantum Computing+" scenarios to actual machine verification and application in real-world settings.
Wen Kai, the founder and CEO of Boson Quantum, holds an undergraduate degree in basic sciences and a master's degree in physics from Tsinghua University, and a Ph.D. in quantum computing from Stanford University, where he studied under Professor Kikuo Yamamoto.
Wen is the first researcher to propose the CIM scheme (Coherent Quantum Computing Technology Roadmap) and has worked on quantum computing projects at major companies such as Google in the U.S. He returned to China and previously founded several companies in AI, smart hardware, and cryptography.
Boson Quantum has already launched a full range of products and services, including coherent photonic quantum computers with 100 and 550 quantum bits, the Wuyue Photonic Quantum Computing Cloud Platform, the Kaiwu SDK for quantum computing development, the Liangshu Photonic Quantum Measurement and Control Unit, and the Lianggui Photonic Quantum Computing Optical Fiber Temperature Control Equipment. These solutions have been applied in sectors such as AI, finance, biopharmaceuticals, transportation logistics, communications, and energy.
In 2024, Boson Quantum sold China’s first commercial photonic quantum computer and issued the first tax invoice for a photonic quantum computer in the country. The company also reached a strategic cooperation agreement with Shenzhen BGI Life Sciences Institute for a "Quantum Computing + Life Sciences" initiative.
The launch of the 550 quantum-bit cloud service has been well-received, with increasing user engagement. The platform has accumulated over 18 million solver calls, covering more than 400 universities and 830 specialties, and has submitted over 440 application reports. Additionally, Boson Quantum launched China’s first practical quantum computing developer community, which has gathered thousands of developers.
Boson Quantum has built a state-of-the-art photonic quantum laboratory covering several thousand square meters. The company has also completed the product development and initial market applications for two generations of dedicated quantum computers—coherent photonic quantum computers—and has made significant progress in fields such as quantum computer manufacturing, photonic quantum chips, quantum operating systems, quantum measurement and control equipment, and quantum cloud platforms.
