Video editing app Captions is looking to cash in on uncertainty around TikTok and ByteDance’s video editing app CapCut’s future in the U.S. by turning to a freemium model.

The app, backed by Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz, has been a paid-only app until now. However, the company is changing its course to become more competitive in the video editing market by competing more directly with the likes of CapCut, InShot, and InVideo.

The free tier will include basic video editing tools with features like adding subtitles and a teleprompter for recording, voiceovers, and more. The company is putting all its AI features, such as AI avatars, editing, and social studio suite, in its paid tier.

The company’s CEO, Gaurav Misra, told TechCrunch that if CapCut gets banned, a lot of people will lose access to its video editing tools — and Captions wants to fill that gap. While TikTok’s and CapCut’s fate is not sealed, Captions wants to bank on the doubt amongst users to put itself as a favored alternative.

“Our app has a lot of AI-powered editing features at the moment. However, there are a lot of people who use different apps for traditional video editing without using AI-powered features, and our free tier is targeting that audience,” Misra said.

CapCut has been downloaded over 1.3 billion times in the past two years, has had 51.2 million daily active users on average, and has earned over $460 million in in-app purchases, according to data analytics firm Sensor Tower.

Misra also noted that, unlike AI-powered features, a lot of these basic video editing features run locally on the device, so there is no server cost to the company, and it can afford to give them away for free.

The company said that it plans to bring more AI-powered features to cheaper tiers as the cost of running AI models goes down. Captions said that it has already included its AI creator feature in the $10 per month Pro plan.
