ChatGPT has been updated with a new ‘Memory’ feature exclusivelyfor ChatGPT Plus subscribers, that can permanently store details about users, such as their personal information, queries, prompts, and other customizations. The feature was first rolled out to a limited number of people in February of2024.
The Memory feature functions in two ways: one by being askedby the user to remember specific information, and the other by self-learningfrom conversations, which is akin to how algorithmic systems work in apps. OnceChatGPT saves the information, it can make conversations with users more customizablewithout needing any reminders.
OpenAI has also clarified that users will be able to controlwhat information they want ChatGPT to remember. The AI assistant will keepnotifying users about updates to its Memory, so they will be able to view allthe details that ChatGPT retains, and even remove any unwanted details wheneverthey want.
The feature allows ChatGPT to make more personalized conversationswith users in real time. The only regions where it is not yet available areKorea and Europe; and OpenAI has given no explanation as to why this is thecase. Memory will begin rolling out to paying users of ChatGPT, but there is noinformation regarding the date.
